In 1991 Whistler Blackcomb made history by becoming the first ski resort outside of the United States to be recognized as the #1 Ski Resort in North America by Snow Country Magazine and attained #1 status with Ski, Skiing and SnowCountry in 1994.
The stats say it all; Whistler Blackcomb has the highest vertical, the most ski-able terrain, and the best and most accessible backcountry. The rugged, glaciated mountains of BC's Coast Range are a world unto themselves and paradise to snow-obsessed skiers and riders.
The old mountain adage, if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes, is certainly applicable at Whistler Blackcomb, but another apt saying would be, if you don't like the weather in the valley, head up the mountain. Whistler Blackcomb is located in the Coast Mountains about 50km/30mi as the crow flies away from the Pacific Ocean. This proximity to the ocean greatly influences the weather, sometimes giving rainy weather in the valley which turns to plentiful powder in the alpine. A low cloud ceiling will often trick skiers and riders into thinking they're in for a gray day, until they pop through the clouds into bluebird skies.
Whistler Blackcomb's Parks & Pipes are where the boys and girls who go big want to play...but there is plenty of room in the sandbox for all ages and abilities to play. What started out as two hand-dug tabletops, a snow spine and a halfpipe on Blackcomb, has exploded into multiple snowy playgrounds on two mountains, each designed and built to scale for specific ability levels.
